This project involved the conversion of an existing nursing home into 17 high-quality residential units. The redevelopment included a substantial three-storey rear extension, alongside the introduction of a new zinc-clad roof extension, which accommodates two large, high-end penthouse apartments with private roof terraces.

The design approach focused on maximising the potential of the existing building while introducing a contemporary residential character appropriate for modern living. Careful consideration was given to the scale, massing, and articulation of the new additions to ensure they sit comfortably within the context of the original structure and do not overwhelm its form.

A key aspect of the scheme was the sensitive integration of the extensions, both at upper and lower levels, ensuring a coherent architectural language across the entire building. The new roof level intervention in particular was designed to provide a distinct yet complementary addition, offering generous internal layouts and private external amenity space in the form of landscaped roof terraces.

Material selection played an important role in distinguishing the new elements from the existing fabric, with zinc cladding introduced at roof level to create a refined, contemporary expression. This is balanced against more traditional elements at lower levels, resulting in a layered composition that reflects both the building’s original character and its new residential use.

Overall, the project successfully transforms a large institutional building into a series of contemporary residential units, improving both its architectural quality and long-term usability while responding sensitively to its established form and context.
