Set within the rugged rural landscape between Laghey and Donegal Town, this project comprises the design and construction of a contemporary 1½-storey detached residence and detached garage. The dwelling has been carefully conceived to respond to its countryside setting, drawing inspiration from the simple forms and materiality of traditional rural architecture while providing a modern, light-filled home for contemporary living. Contemporary rural homes often reinterpret traditional agricultural forms through simple massing, carefully framed views and a restrained material palette, creating architecture that sits comfortably within the landscape.

The accommodation has been thoughtfully arranged to provide flexibility and longevity, comprising three to four bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, a dedicated sunroom, three bathrooms, a utility room and a home office. The internal layout centres around a generous living area, where large areas of glazing maximise natural daylight and establish a strong visual connection with the surrounding landscape. The arrangement of spaces has been developed to balance open-plan living with more intimate and private areas, creating a home that is both functional and welcoming.

Architecturally, the dwelling adopts a contemporary interpretation of the traditional rural house, utilising simple pitched roof forms and a carefully considered composition of volumes. The design seeks to create a building that feels rooted in its setting while expressing a distinctly modern character. Particular attention has been given to orientation, natural light and views, ensuring that the principal living spaces engage directly with the landscape and benefit from changing seasonal conditions throughout the year. Similar contemporary rural projects often use simple forms and carefully positioned glazing to strengthen the relationship between the home and its surroundings.

The external material palette has been selected to complement the natural character of the site and to ensure the building weathers gracefully over time. The combination of traditional forms, contemporary detailing and natural materials creates a timeless architectural language that sits comfortably within the Donegal countryside while delivering a highly energy-efficient and sustainable family home. The use of natural finishes and restrained detailing reflects an increasingly common approach in contemporary rural architecture, where buildings are designed to integrate with rather than dominate the landscape.
