Cantilever House
Location: Wimbledon
Type: Residential
Stage: Complete
Brief: Single storey rear and side infill extension, along with complete refurbishment

This project comprised the complete refurbishment and extension of an existing 1950s semi-detached house in Wimbledon. The original property included an underutilised rear conservatory, which was demolished to accommodate the new works. New single-storey extensions were constructed to the rear and side of the closet wing.
In responding to the local vernacular, the design of the extensions carefully considered the close proximity of adjoining properties and the irregular geometry of the site. This resulted in a complex roof form, which has been largely resolved externally through the use of pitched roof structures. A key design objective was the maximisation of natural daylight within the increased ground floor footprint. This was achieved through the introduction of large glazed openings, including bifold doors, windows and rooflights.
A significant feature of the scheme is the large corner bifold door arrangement, which, when fully opened, reveals a cantilevered roof structure and creates a strong connection between the interior and exterior spaces, enhancing the sense of openness and spatial continuity.
The project also included a comprehensive internal refurbishment, including the replacement of all existing glazing with high-performance double-glazed units, as well as the installation of ultra-slim framed sliding doors and fixed glazing to the existing rear dormer.
