Brief: Rear Extension

This project involved the addition of a rear extension to the existing dwelling, providing increased internal accommodation and improving the functionality of the ground floor layout. The proposal replaces a series of existing outbuildings located to the rear of the property, which were no longer fit for purpose and contributed little to the overall use or quality of the external space.

The new extension spans the full width of the site and is expressed as a single-storey volume with a flat roof and parapet detailing. This approach allows rooflights to be discreetly integrated while maintaining a clean and understated roofline when viewed from both the garden and surrounding context.

Careful consideration was given to the scale, proportion, and materiality of the extension to ensure it sits comfortably alongside the host building. The design intent was to create a clearly contemporary yet complementary addition that remains subordinate to the original dwelling, preserving the architectural hierarchy between old and new.

The chosen material palette of brickwork and simple, well-proportioned glazed elements was informed by the existing house, ensuring a sensitive response to the original fabric. The extension avoids overt contrast, instead adopting a restrained architectural language that allows the existing building to remain visually dominant. As a result, the original plan form of the house remains legible, with the extension reading as a considered and cohesive enhancement rather than a competing intervention.

Internally, the extension improves spatial flow and provides greater connection between the rear of the house and the garden, enhancing natural light and usability of the main living spaces while maintaining a strong relationship with the character of the existing property.
