Five Ash Down Development
Location: Five Ash Down, East Sussex
Type: Residential
Stage: Pre-construction
Brief: 3no New Build Houses
This scheme, which recently obtained planning approval, comprises three contemporary dwellings, carefully composed to respond to both the character of the surrounding context and the requirements of modern family living.
Each dwelling is designed as a 2.5-storey form, with a strong emphasis on proportion, materiality, and spatial quality. The architectural approach seeks to balance contemporary design with a sensitivity to its village setting, delivering well-considered homes that sit comfortably within their environment. Generous rear gardens and dedicated off-street parking are incorporated into the layout, ensuring both practicality and long-term residential amenity.
The external palette is led by charred timber cladding, providing a cohesive and robust architectural expression across the development. This is complemented by areas of naturally finished timber, strategically introduced to articulate key elements of the façades and to create a subtle contrast in tone and texture. The material strategy is intended to weather naturally over time, further integrating the buildings into their landscape setting.
Internally, each dwelling is configured to support contemporary lifestyles, offering three bedrooms, a dedicated home office, and flexible living arrangements. The ground floor is organised around a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space, supported by a separate secondary living or playroom area, providing adaptability for family use.
Overall, the proposal delivers a refined and contextually responsive residential scheme, combining material richness with functional planning to create a series of contemporary homes rooted in their village setting.
