This project involved the replacement of an existing, underutilised conservatory with a new, more functional rear extension to accommodate an open-plan kitchen and living space. The intervention was designed to significantly improve the usability of the ground floor while creating a stronger and more considered relationship between the dwelling and the rear garden.

A key objective of the scheme was to maximise natural light and enhance the sense of openness within the new space. This was achieved through the introduction of a large set of bifolding doors with a flush, level threshold, allowing the interior to flow seamlessly into the garden. In addition, three generously proportioned rooflights were incorporated to draw daylight deep into the plan, ensuring a bright and naturally lit living environment throughout the day.

Equally important to the design approach was the need to ensure the extension complemented the architectural character of the existing period property. This was achieved through the use of reclaimed brickwork and carefully considered traditional detailing, including a brick-on-edge parapet and brick soldier courses. These elements help to root the extension in its context while maintaining a refined and contemporary interpretation of traditional materials.
