This project involved the complete refurbishment and extension of an existing, outdated terraced house located in a picturesque part of Wimbledon.

A key challenge of the scheme was the significant change in site levels, with a difference of approximately 0.75m between the existing internal floor level and the external garden. The clients were keen to avoid internal steps between the original dwelling and the new rear extension, which introduced constraints in relation to planning and overall building height. As a result, a lean-to roof form was adopted to minimise the eaves height; however, this resulted in a reduced internal floor-to-ceiling height of approximately 1.9m at the lowest point.

To overcome this, a large rooflight was introduced above the rear extension, increasing perceived head height by approximately 0.5m while also accommodating taller slim-framed sliding doors. This intervention not only improved spatial proportions but also enhanced the quality of natural light within the space.

The existing property was also comprehensively stripped back and refurbished throughout. At ground floor level, internal walls were removed to create a fully open-plan arrangement incorporating kitchen, dining, and living areas. This new layout establishes a dual-aspect space, with glazing to the front elevation and large slim-framed sliding doors to the rear, maximising natural light and strengthening the connection to the garden.

The inclusion of the large rooflight further enhances this openness, bringing daylight deep into the centre of the plan and improving both the spatial quality and overall usability of the ground floor.

A contemporary material and finish palette was introduced throughout, with modern fixtures and a minimalist aesthetic forming the basis of the interior design. To introduce warmth and continuity, timber detailing was carefully integrated across the scheme, including within the sliding door reveals and new staircase, helping to soften the contemporary interventions and create a cohesive architectural language throughout.
