Pine House
Location: Wimbledon
Type: Residential
Stage: Complete
Brief: Single storey rear extension, along with complete refurbishment
This project involved the complete refurbishment and extension of an existing outdated terraced house in a picturesque part of Wimbledon.
The main challenge of this project was the gradient of the site, as there was a large difference in level between the interior and exterior (circa 0.75m). The clients did not want internal steps between the existing floor level and the new rear extension floor level, which created difficulties in relation to planning, as we were restricted height wise for the extension. Part of the solution was to create a lean to roof so the eaves height could be as low as possible, however this resulted in an internal floor to ceiling height of 1.9 (at the lowest point) - To address this height issue, a large rooflight was incorporated to give an additional 0.5m in head height, and also to allow for a taller set of slimframe sliding doors.
The interior of the house was also completely gutted and refurbished throughout. This included removing all internal walls at ground level, to create an open plan living space with kitchen and dining areas. It also created a dual aspect space, with windows to the front and a large set of slimframe sliding door (to maixmise natural light) to the rear. The inclusion of the large rooflight not only created more head space to the rear, it also allowed more natural light to filter into the centre of the open plan space.
Modern and contemporary fixtures were utilised throughout the new minimalist interior, and to give the property a sense of warmth and continuity, timber features are used everywhere from the external sliding doors reveal to the new stairs.
